One Dead, Two Injured In Fiery Crash On I-88 In Naperville

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A fiery crash involving two vehicles on I-88 leaves one person dead and two people injured.

According to the Illinois State Police, it happened on Interstate 88 westbound at milepost 127.3 (Naperville Road.) Police said one vehicle rear-ended another and both cars caught fire.

The passenger in the second vehicle died on the scene.

ISP said the driver of the first vehicle is 70-year-old James Topps of Powder Springs, Georgia. Salim Mezra, 36, of Lincoln, Nebraska is the driver of the second vehicle. The male passenger who died has not been identified.

ISP said the driver of the first vehicle was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening-injuries. The driver of the second car was also taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities said the second vehicle had stopped and was disabled in the second lane of traffic because it was having mechanical problems. For unknown reasons, the first vehicle, a truck tractor, wasn't able to stop in time to avoid hitting the second car.

All westbound lanes of Interstate 88 are now reopened. The incident is currently under investigation.
