One Dead, Three Hurt In Bus Crash In Edgewater

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man loading groceries into his car in Edgewater was killed late Wednesday morning, after his car was struck by another vehicle involved in a crash with a CTA bus.

Police confirmed one person was killed after a CTA bus and multiple other vehicles collided at 5335 N. Sheridan Rd. around 11:15 a.m.

The CTA said a northbound #147 bus was stopped at Sheridan and Balmoral Avenue when it was hit by a passing vehicle.

A Fire Department spokesperson said one other person was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious-to-critical condition, and two people were taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital in fair-to-serious condition.

According to witnesses, a red Ford was trying to go around the CTA bus, but instead plowed into two or three parked cars at a high rate of speed. Robert Cash works at the pizza restaurant in the block.

"The red car blew through the red light at a very fast speed, 50, 60 miles-per-hour, and hit the back of the guy's car with him in between it hit him so hard it hit the next three parked cars in front of him," Cash said.

Police confirm the driver is in custody and charges are pending.

CBS 2's Jim Williams reports a man loading groceries into his car was struck and killed by one of the vehicles. The man who was killed apparently had been loading groceries into the black car from the Care for Real food pantry. Cash rushed to the man's aide but it was too late.

It was a gruesome scene two hours ago, "I'm still shaking," Cash said.

People who live here say drivers often go much too fast on Sheridan.

"That's always happening in this area, they're always trying to go around the bus," said Fidel Medrano.

Charges are pending. Sources tell CBS 2 investigators are looking at surveillance video from that CTA bus.
