Officer injured, juvenile in custody after carjacking crash

CHICAGO (CBS) – An officer is injured and a 16-year-old is in custody after crashing a stolen vehicle around midnight in Chicago's South Loop, Illinois State Police said.

The crash happened at East Balbo and South Wabash around midnight as a result of a carjacking involving two vehicles. Chicago Police said the vehicle the teen was driving was stolen from a 71-year-old man on Friday evening in the Near North neighborhood. 

An officer, who was on foot, was hit by one of the vehicles. He was transported to Northwestern Hospital in good condition.

The teen stole the car and crashed into another one, according to police. 

Three others were also taken to an area hospital. Another man was injured but refused treatment. 

The teen is now charged with one felony count of vehicular hijacking with a firearm and one felony count of possession of a stolen vehicle.
