Officer Charged In Laquan McDonald Shooting Scheduled To Make Court Appearance Monday

(CBS) -- The Chicago Police Officer at the center of a controversial police shooting is expected to go before a judge on Monday.

It will be officer Jason Van Dyke's first court appearance since the city released the now infamous video of the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald.

Protesters were out on the Mag Mile Saturday night, showing anger over the shooting. CBS 2's Susanna Song reports Van Dyke will appear in court Monday and faces the possibility of bonding out.

The 37-year-old officer has been in jail since Tuesday when he turned himself into authorities. He's been charged with first degree murder.

It was dashcam video released last week that finally revealed what happened the night of October 20, 2014. As the teenager walks away from police, Van Dyke shot McDonald 16 times. He unloaded his magazine and prosecutors said he was about to reload his gun when his partner made him stop.

Across the city, protesters marched, but in smaller numbers than we've seen so far. Yesterday's rallies drew just a fraction of the crowds from Friday's Mag Mile march but the message was the same, supporting victims of police brutality and demanding that the mayor, police superintendent and state's attorney step down from office.

Most of the demonstrators were peaceful, but a few were arrested.
Some marched in Woodlawn on 63rd and Cottage Grove, others prayed and marched around City Hall. Demonstrators carried a coffin to symbolize that the killings have to stop.

"City Hall is where it needs to be because this is where the cover up took place," said Violence Interrupters President Tio Hardiman. "Mayor Rahm and Superintendent McCarthy covered this whole execution up."

Last week a Cook County judge said he wanted to see the dashcam video before he set the bond. Monday we'll know what that amount is and if the officer bonds out.
