Off-Duty Sheriff's Officer Shot During Robbery Attempt In Gresham

(STMW) -- An off-duty Cook County Sheriff's correctional officer was shot during a robbery attempt in the South Side Gresham neighborhood early Sunday.

About 3:40 a.m., someone tried to rob the 34-year-old officer in the 7900 block of South Paulina and shot him in the hand, police said.

His condition was stabilized at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Sophia Ansari, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Sheriff's office, confirmed the man is a correctional officer and said in an email that "it appears the officer is going to be OK."

"Our primary concern is for the safety and well-being of our officer," Ansari said.
