Off-Duty CPD Officer Shoots Person During Attempted Carjacking
CHICAGO (CBS) -- An off-duty Chicago Police officer shot a person Monday night during an attempted carjacking in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side, police said.
"It shows how brazen these offenders are. They'll target anyone, and tonight it just happened to be one of our own," Police News Affairs Sgt. Cindy Guerra said.
Two people approached the off-duty officer just before 7 p.m. in the 3600 block of South Prairie and tried to steal the officer's vehicle, according to Chicago Police.
"The offender on the passenger's side tapped on the window, and tried to distract the off-duty police officer, while the offender on the driver's side announced a robbery," Guerra said.
The officer was not in uniform, but was carrying his service weapon. When one of the robbers pointed a gun at him, the officer reacted and fired his service weapon once, striking one of the robbers in the stomach, according to police.
The suspect who was shot, a juvenile, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious but stable condition. The other offender ran off and was still at large Tuesday morning.
One weapon, in addition to the officer's gun, was recovered at the scene, police said. The officer was not hurt.
The officer, who has 18 years of experience, will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days.
