Off-Duty Cop Charged With DUI After Pedestrian Struck On NW Side

(CBS) -- An off-duty Chicago Police officer has been charged with DUI after a woman was struck by his vehicle and critically injured on the Northwest Side, according to Police News Affairs.

Police say the 21-year-old woman was waiting to cross the street in the 7500 block of West Belmont when she was struck by a vehicle driven by the off-duty officer around 1:20 a.m. Saturday. She was taken in critical condition to Loyola Medical Center.

The driver, a two-year veteran of the police department, has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of DUI and was cited for failure to exercise due care with a pedestrian on the roadway, police said.

The name of the officer has not been released. He has been relieved of police powers pending the outcome of the investigation and is expected in traffic court Aug. 18.
