Off-Duty Cop Carjacked

(WBBM Newsradio) -- An off-duty Chicago police officer was the victim of a carjacking in Bucktown Tuesday morning.

Chicago Police say the officer, 43, was sitting in his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee near Wolcott and Cortland when two men took his Jeep at gunpoint.

Police say the two carjackers were wearing overalls and hoodies and fled west on Cortland in the black Jeep.

No one was hurt in the carjacking -- small consolation to one city leader.

"It's been kind of crazy trying to keep track of these," says Ald. Scott Waguespack. His 32nd Ward is where Tuesday's crime occurred.

He says residents were already frustrated because of so many carjackings.

"We're not seeing the kind of response from leadership in the city that you would normally see - or should see - when you have close to 900 carjackings in Chicago last year," Waguespack says. "And already starting out with a detective being carjacked this year."

Waguespack says some equipment, like ammunition, was inside the officer's vehicle.
