CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man and two teen boys were charged after an off-duty Chicago Police officer exchanged gunfire with a group of suspected carjackers Thursday night in the Calumet Heights neighborhood.

The incident happened at 88th Street and Constance Avenue at 6:04 p.m.

The officer was getting something out of her white Tesla when, out of nowhere, another car pulled up – with three guys with guns inside.

One of the carjackers jumped out and pointed a gun at the woman. But he did not realize she was packing herself – and more importantly, that he was attempting to rob an off-duty police officer.

The officer pulled her weapon, and a rapid exchange of gunfire filled the block. It is not clear who fired first, but we know up to 13 shots were exchanged in the gun battle between the officer and the suspects.

Some of the bullets shattered the rear side window of the officer's Tesla, but at least one of the bullets hit the attempted carjacker.

The injured carjacker took off running with a trail of blood behind him, while those still in the car drove off. A short while later, someone was dropped off at Advocate Trinity Hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

A source told CBS 2 Friday that the person who showed up to the hospital left a shoe at the scene – and showed up at the hospital for treatment without a shoe.

Both he and the other two suspects who drove off were in custody late Friday and charged Saturday morning.

Kendrick Anderson, 18, was charged with attempted vehicular hijacking with a firearm. He was arrested in the 2300 block of East 93rd Street around 6:24 Friday.

A 16-year-old boy was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and a 15-year-old boy was charged with a misdemeanor count of criminal trespass to a vehicle. Both were arrested Thursday around 7:41 p.m., in the 8000 block of South Vernon Avenue.

Anderson appeared in bond court Saturday and is being held on $7 million bond, due to two prior criminal cases he has.

The juveniles were also scheduled to appear in bond court.

The off-duty officer was shaken but was not injured. She has been placed on routine administrative duty as the Civilian Office of Police Accountability looks into the matter.
