Off-Duty Chicago Police Officer Shot While Parked

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago Police officer recovers tonight, shot, after work and after someone drove up to his vehicle.

It happened while the officer, off duty, was parked.

CBS2's Lauren Victory, reports one of this holiday weekend's shootings happened on 31st Street Between Loomis and Aberdeen.

A witness, who captured the shooting on video, and didn't want to be identified, said he heard about four or five shots.

"It's getting too close for comfort in my neighborhood. And it's a beautiful, peaceful quiet neighborhood and that just scares everybody right now."

The officer had just gotten off of work and was headed home in a personal car. He slowed down to let another vehicle pass, and shots flew his way.

"I realized like 30 seconds later because he had a radio in his hand. Then I realized it was an officer," the witness said.

The off-duty cop returned fire, but people in the other car sped off. Police said the officer received a graze wound to his arm and was treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, but is expected to be OK.

His fellow officers combed through the area in the daylight for clues.

"I don't know what to say anymore, it's just sad," The witness said. "He's trying to go home to his family and he almost didn't make it home."

This is the first of two police officers who were victims of separate crimes over the weekend.
