NW Side Street Renamed For Police Officer 40 Years After He Was Killed In The Line Of Duty

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Forty years after a Chicago police officer was killed in the line of duty, the Northwest Side street where he lived will be renamed in his honor.

"He had just bought his first house," retired Chicago Police Officer Jim Kehoe. "I'm not even sure he'd made his first mortgage payment on it."

Kehoe was the partner of Officer Joe Cali that night in May 1975, when Cali was writing a parking ticket - and was shot and killed by a sniper at a CHA building on the West Side.

"My absolute first thought was... it's a little early for the Fourth of July. And then out of the corner of my eye, I saw Joe fall," he said.

Kehoe was 24 years old in 1975. Officer Cali was 31.

"He had two little girls that he absolutely adored," Kehoe said. "He had a beautiful wife. He had a lot of things to look forward to."

On Saturday, part of the Northwest Side street where Officer Cali lived will be renamed in his honor.

Jim Kehoe has been leading the push for that.

"Because I know he would do it for me."
