Number Of Chicago Schools With High Lead Levels Rises To 14

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two more Chicago schools have tested for high lead levels in their water, bringing to 14 the number facilities with readings above federal guidelines.

Water in affected fountains and sinks has been turned off, except at Reilly Elementary, where all sinks and faucets are now dry pending additional tests.

On Wednesday, CPS said there were 12 schools. The two new schools made public on Thursday are Beasley and Blaine.

Here is the full list:

Beasley (1 drinking fountain, 2 sinks and 1 sink in kitchen that is not used)
Beidler (1 sink)
Blaine (1 drinking fountain and 1 sink)
Brentano (1 drinking fountain and 1 sink for hand washing in kitchen)
Budlong (1 sink)
Esmond (1 drinking fountain)
Fernwood (2 drinking fountains)
Harvard (1 drinking fountain)
LaSalle II (1 sink)
Locke J (1 sink)
Peirce (1 drinking fountain)
Perez (1 drinking fountain)
Reilly (being retested)
Tanner (4 drinking fountains)

High lead levels at Tanner Elementary School found last month prompted CPS officials to begin testing district-wide. Oldest schools come first.

Officials say so far they've tested 169 schools. Water samples were taken from nearly 700 faucets and fountains. Of those, 31 at 14 schools had lead levels above the EPA safety standards.

CPS officials are testing schools every day, getting 10 to 20 results back every day.

The city's health department has also set up a hotline where you can ask questions. That number is 312 747-LEAD.
