Northbound Interstate 65 Closed Near Lafayette Due To Bridge Concern

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Authorities have closed northbound Interstate 65 near Lafayette after engineers on Friday discovered a potential problem with the bridge support.

The bridge over Wildcat Creek had been reopened on Wednesday after it had been closed Tuesday because construction crews noticed structural problems, which may have been related to construction in the area.

Engineers monitoring the bridge noticed movement in a riverbank pier on Friday and the bridge was shut down again, according to an alert from Indiana State police.

Northbound traffic is being diverted onto U.S. 52 at Exit 141 near Lebanon, about 35 miles south of Lafayette.

The detour continues on 52 for 17 miles, where motorists will turn left onto State Road 28 for 10 miles to U.S. 231.

Then, drivers will take U.S. 231 for about 30 miles until it intersects with I-65 in White County.

Authorities did not say when the bridge would reopen.
