Norovirus Detected At Chicago High-Rise For Seniors

(CBS) -- There has been an outbreak of Norovirus at a North Side retirement home, but it appears to be subsiding, city health officials say.

The Chicago Department of Public Health has confirmed to WBBM that it has been working with the management of The Breakers of Edgewater Beach, a retirement home at 5333 N. Sheridan Road, over an outbreak of Norovirus at their facility.

Department officials say they were first notified of the situation on Jan. 22 and responded immediately.

Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause the stomach flu, or gastroenteritis, in people. The term norovirus was recently approved as the official name for this group of viruses.

CDPH has also been tracking the progression of the illness and it appears to be subsiding, the department said. The department provided guidance to the facility and residents about ways to prevent the spread, such as having residents take meals in their own apartments.
