None Injured, But Cat Killed In High-Rise Fire In Edgewater

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Several people rushed out of their apartments Monday morning, after a fire in a high-rise in the Edgewater neighborhood.

No residents were injured, but a cat was killed in the fire in the 5800 block of North Sheridan Road, which left one person without a home.

The fire started around 3:15 a.m., on the third floor of the 12-story apartment building. By the time firefighters arrived, there was so much smoke that the entire third and fourth floors had to be evacuated. Many people in the upper floors also evacuated due to the smoke.

"We had to cut across to the back stairwell, and there was a bunch of firemen coming up the stairwell there, and they kind of led us out, right before they busted one of the windows on the 3rd floor," Morgan Toms said. "My boyfriend and I grabbed our dog, and our wallets, and just ran."

Three people were treated at the scene, but refused to be taken to hospitals.

A cat did not survive the fire.

One person was left homeless.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
