Nine Displaced By Fire In Sauk Village
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Firefighters braved subzero temperatures overnight as they put out a house fire in far south suburban Sauk Village.
Fire crews from Sauk Village, Steger, Crete, and Dyer, Indiana, rotated shifts as they poured water on the flames in the 22500 block of Jeffrey Avenue for at least two-and-a-half hours, according to Emergency Services Sgt. Arlene Stevens.
While one group would work on dousing the flames, others were keeping warm inside their trucks.
"Frostbite and everything else, when it is below zero like this, it's very dangerous," Stevens said.
Temperatures were as cold as 3 below zero in the area overnight. Despite the frigid weather, there were no problems with frozen hydrants, according to Stevens.
"All of them worked. We were able to put out the fire in a timely manner," she said.
The American Red Cross was providing assistance to the nine people who lived in the home, supplying food and clothing. Not all of them were home at the time of the blaze, and everyone got out safe.
No one was injured in the fire, but the home sustained heavy damage.
