Newborn Survives Mom's Attempt To Suffocate Baby With Plastic Bag: Police

(CBS) -- Police officers and firefighters responding to a medical call for a pregnant woman encountered a horrific scene: the mother's alleged attempt to suffocate her newborn with a plastic bag.

The incident happened at 7:20 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Morton Grove Police Department. Firefighters and police who responded to the medical call found a 21-year-old woman in the bathroom "in distress," police said.

Fire personnel found an unresponsive newborn hidden in a sealed plastic bag under some towels, the news release said.
