New Standardized Tests Come Under Fire

(CBS) -- More than 1 million Illinois students are just months away from taking a brand-new standardized test—unless thousands of people get their way.

CBS 2's Dana Kozlov explains why educators and parents alike are fighting to delay the new test in this original report.

It's sample test time for grade school parents. They're stumped, and they're taking the new PARCC standardized test for third-graders.

More than 2,500 people have signed a petition asking the Illinois State Board of Education to delay giving the new, required, Common Core linked tests for at least a year.

Alissa Levy-Chung, a child development professor, believes the test's structure could set many students up to fail. Besides content, the online format requires a lot of scrolling, clicking and dragging. That's if schools can swing it, technologically.

Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett shares those concerns and has formally asking for a waiver, too.

The state board of educations' spokesperson says ultimately it's up to the U.S. Department of Education to grant a waiver.

The PARCC test replaces the ISATs, and results will play a major role in determining school, teachers and students' future, but not this year.  As for that U.S. Department of Education response to CPS, a spokesperson says they are still waiting for it.
