New Snowfall Could Make This Winter 3rd Snowiest Ever

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Flurries began falling early Wednesday, making streets slick, and covering sidewalks with a light dusting of snow for the morning commute.

The Department of Streets and Sanitation deployed 160 snow plows to Chicago's main streets around 3:30 a.m. as snow began falling in the city.

CBS 2 Meteorologist Megan Glaros reports snow likely will continue falling until about noon, with the heaviest accumulations between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Between 1 and 3 inches should fall before the snow is done.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory through noon.

According to the National Weather Service, up to 4 inches of snow could fall in some isolated areas. If that does happen in the right locations, this winter could officially become the third snowiest on record.

As of Tuesday night, 73.4 inches of snow had fallen at O'Hare International Airport since the end of July, ranking the 2013-14 season as fourth snowiest on record in Chicago – 3.6 inches behind the amount of snow that fell between July 1969 and June 1970 – 77.0 inches.
