New Images, Video Of Man On Bike Suspected In Fulton River District Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A clearer picture and surveillance video were released late Thursday showing a man who police believe shot and wounded a woman as he rode his bicycle in the Fulton River District.

Police released new images Thursday showing the bicyclist. Police believe he is the one who shot a woman in the back at 212 N. Milwaukee Ave. just before noon on Wednesday, as she was on her way to lunch.

The man is seen on a mountain bike with a baseball cap, white gym shoes, and what appears to be a coffee cup in his backpack.

The new surveillance video shows the man inside a bike shop. A clearer photo was released earlier in the day.

As CBS 2's Jim Williams reported, police officers throughout the day were on the scene on Milwaukee Avenue where the victim was shot. And security is tight outside that office tower on Canal Street. One security guard told CBS 2, "It's a sensitive time."

Officers in sport-utility vehicles and on bikes at Milwaukee Avenue and Lake Street were there one day after the shooting.

Since then, police have been going through surveillance video.

Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said the woman was walking with two acquaintances when the lone gunman on a pulled up on his bike, extended his arm, and fired a single shot. The gunman passed by a group of other people and went directly to the woman, Johnson said.

The gunman fled northwest on Milwaukee Avenue on his bicycle, Johnson said.

"The incident did not happen in an area known for gang conflict," Johnson said Wednesday. "It appears right now that the victim might have been targeted by the offender."

In June, a gunman on a bike shot a 27-year-old woman in the 600 block of West Surf Street in East Lakeview. Police don't believe the two shootings are related. The shooter on Surf Street was white. The gunman Wednesday on Milwaukee Avenue was black.

The 28-year-old victim is recovering after surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
