New $6M MetroSquash Facility Opens In Woodlawn

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An exciting new program has sprouted up in the Woodlawn neighborhood, as city officials unveiled a new eight-court squash facility.

The new $6 million Metrosquash center at 61st Street and Cottage Grove Avenue is so state-of-the-art, the 2015 World Doubles squash championship will be held there next month.

Officials broke ground on the 21,000-square-foot facility last July.

The Woodlawn facility is the largest squash complex in the Midwest, and will allow Hyde Park-based MetroSquash to double the number of students in its afterschool and summer school programs from 150 to 300.

Boosters said squash is one of the healthiest sports on the planet. Kids between 5th grade and college are eligible to participate in the program, which pairs students with volunteers from the University of Chicago, to enhance both athletic and academic skills.
