Neighbors Help Rescue Toddler From Pond In Merrillville

(CBS) -- Quick thinking neighbors in Merrillville, Indiana jumped into action to rescue a toddler from a pond.

Police say the child lives in an apartment building the 6600 block of Hayes Street. Just after 3 p.m. Tuesday, neighbors say they heard the frantic mother screaming for help

"At first I know she was yelling for help," said Bianca Banes. "I didn't know that she was yelling for that. I just know that she was yelling and something just told me to get up and see what was going on."

Those neighbors pulled the child out of the water and performed CPR. That's when emergency crews arrived and rushed the child to the hospital.

Police are now investigating just how this could have happened.
