Nearly Half Of Illinois Voters Want To Leave State, New Poll Finds

(CBS) -- A new poll of Illinois voters finds almost half say they would like to leave Illinois.

As WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports, a survey for the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University found many of the 1,000 people questioned feel Illinois is moving in the wrong direction.

Institute Director David Yepsen says 47 percent would like to head in a different direction.

"Just a lot of unhappiness in Illinois," Yepsen says.

Twenty percent of those surveyed say they're likely to leave the state in the coming year. But a more disturbing finding shows younger people want to leave at a higher rate than older folks.

Some people say they'd like to leave because of the taxes, weather and government. While government officials can't do anything about the weather, Yepsen says they could make government work better for Illinois citizens.
