More Than 22,000 Unemployment Claims Filed In Illinois Last Week Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

CHICAGO (CBS)-- The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) reported 22,258 new unemployment claims were filed during the week of August 16 in Illinois, a 21% increase from the previous week, when 18,426 people filed.

It's also the highest number of weekly claims in the state in the last five weeks. However, it's a 15% from this time last year, when 26,262 weekly claims were filed.

For perspective, during the same week in 2019, before the pandemic, 7,376 people filed unemployment claims in Illinois.

Last week's claims in Illinois were among 353,000 total claims filed across the country.
