Napoleon Harris Touting Leadership In Bid To Top Better Known Rivals For Democratic Senate Nomination

(CBS) -- The third Democrat vying for Republican U.S. Senator Mark Kirk's seat was making his case before a luncheon of civic and business leaders today, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore.

State Senator Napoleon Harris' bid for the U.S. Senate is often overshadowed by those of his Democratic rivals, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth and former Chicago Urban League president Andrea Zopp.

The former NFL and Northwestern linebacker told the City Club of Chicago he is in the race because government lacks leadership and he's lived through challenges officials are called to solve.

"Government is a team sport, similar to athletics," he said. "You have to work well with others. Sometimes you work well, sometimes you don't, but I think at the end of the day, in both you need leadership. You need someone to direct traffic, so to speak. In the NFL, I was a middle linebacker. I made the calls."

Harris said he believes he is the only one in the race who has created jobs. He is now an entrepreneur.
