Naperville Write-In Candidate Gets 27 Votes For President
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Naperville man has accomplished something most of us haven't; Phil Seeberg ran for president, and got more than just his own vote.
Seeberg, 56, got exactly 27 votes. That was still good for 10th place in Illinois, and ahead of 21 other candidates.
"I had a little fun pretending to be a presidential candidate," he said.
Seeberg registered as a write-in candidate, because he was unhappy with the two major choices. He said he might not have done such a thing had he lived in a swing state, like Michigan, because the race was so tight there between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
He was registered as a write-in candidate in six counties in Illinois; and received nine votes in Cook, nine in Will, seven in DuPage, two in Kane and none in Lake and Kendall.
"I thought I might get a little bit more, but really I have no political experience," he said.
Seeberg said he thought he would do better in DuPage County in particular, because that's where he works and goes to church.
He said he was hoping for 50 votes total, but was happy to get 27.
"If I got 50, that would be like me winning the World Series. So 27 is not quite making the playoffs; but, hey, it was a fun game while it lasted," Seeberg said.
The Navistar lead applications analyst said he takes a little ribbing from co-workers, who still call him "Mr. President-elect" or "El Presidente." He said he takes it all in good humor.
