Naperville Police Warn Of Spike In Car Burglaries
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police in west suburban Naperville were reminding people to lock their cars, and remove their valuables, after a rash of vehicle burglaries in the past month.
Since July 15, Naperville police have had more than 100 reports of car burglaries, according to police Cmdr. Lou Cammiso.
"Most of these are due to the vehicles being left outside and unlocked overnight, so it's definitely a crime of opportunity," he said.
Among other things, the thieves have stolen phones, laptops, wallets, purses, and cash.
"Think of all the things we leave in our cars from time to time. You know, many times people forget to lock their car," he said. "Especially when we leave valuables in there, I think we need to be a little more diligent."
Cammiso said people should save themselves the hassle of having to replace their personal possessions by locking their cars whenever they leave a vehicle unattended.
He also noted it takes time for police to conduct investigations, and while they have leads in some recent burglaries, if the past is an indicator, most cases likely involve teenagers.
