Murdered Mail Carrier Remembered By Neighborhood He Served

(CBS) -- A South Side neighborhood turned out to remember a beloved mail carrier, murdered outside his home on Sept. 20.

It's one thing for family, friends and neighbors to turn out at a memorial for a murder victim. What made this memorial unusual is the face that it took place nearly 10 miles away from victim Tyjuan Lewis' Roseland home. It took place in Bridgeport, where he delivered mail for two decades.

Kim Lazo got to know Lewis when she was supervisor at Bosley Park, at 3044 S. Bonfield St. She said he delivered a lot more than the mail.

"He used to stop in on his routes, see if I needed any help, he's stop in the park to ask the grandparents if they needed any help picking up the kids," she said. "He was just here for everybody. It was amazing."

Ald. Patrick Daley Thompson (11th), his predecessor James Balczer and Cook County Commissioner John Daley all spoke. Then, more than 200 people released balloons to the sky, some of which had scrawled upon them messages such as, "Ty, we love you."

Lewis was murdered outside his home on the 10100 block of South Calumet Avenue, moments after he dropped off some of his children. Police continue to seek the killer.
