Police Chase Leads To Shootout In Munster, Indiana; One Suspect Dead

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A police chase led to a shootout that left one suspect dead Sunday morning, Munster police say.

Around 1:30 a.m. Dyer police officer tried to pull over a black Dodge Charger with Tennessee plates at US RT 30 and Hart Street, but the driver disregarded the officers' attempts to stop them and fled north on Hart Street, police said.

The vehicle crashed and rolled over near Columbia Avenue and Calumet before officers were able to use a tire deflation device in order to stop it.

Two people got out of the crashed vehicle and fled into an industrial area west of Calumet Avenue in Munster, police said. Officers chased the suspects, and one stopped and was taken into custody.

The other suspect fired at officers, and officers returned fire, striking and killing the suspect, police said.

The Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force is investigating.
