Five people hurt in high-speed crash on Southwest Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- One person was killed and four more were injured in a multi-vehicle crash in the Ashburn community.

The high-speed accident happened at 9:15 p.m. on West Columbus Avenue at 83rd Street. West Columbus Avenue is a separate and unrelated street from Columbus Drive in Grant Park.

Police said four vehicles were involved in the crash. The Fire Department posted photos showing at least two vehicles that were completely wrecked.

A black Nissan Frontier was headed northeast on Columbus Avenue when it hit a black Mazda sedan head-on at 83rd Street, police said.

Police believe the Nissan was trying to make a left turn.

The man driving the Nissan was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition. The two men in the Mazda were both taken to the same hospital in critical condition, and one of them died at the hospital, police said.

One of the accident victims had to be extricated, the Fire Department said.

The third vehicle was a black sport-utility vehicle that rear-ended the Nissan. Two women were in that vehicle, and they were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition with minor injuries, police said.

The fourth vehicle was a black SUV headed southwest. The man driving that SUV was taken to OSF Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition with minor injuries.
