Mt. Greenwood Post Office Renamed To Honor Fallen Firefighter Herbie Johnson
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Fallen Chicago firefighter Herbie Johnson was remembered Sunday as the Mount Greenwood office was renamed after him.
WBBM's Mariam Sobh reports dozens of friends, family and community members gathered outside the post office for the dedication.
Captain Herbie Johnson died in 2012 at age 54 while battling a fire in an Englewood home. Alderman Matt O'Shea, a close friend, says Johnson was larger than life.
"For this building to be named after him, for his entire family and our entire community to see each and every day as we pass by, it's an honor for him but it's something for all of us too to carry on his memory," O'Shea said.
Johnson's widow and three adult children were all in attendance as well as Congressman Dan Lipinski. Lipinski was instrumental in getting Washington to approve the re-naming of the post office.
"I am proud and honored to have worked on this lasting tribute to someone who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting others from harm. An outgoing, caring, and dedicated public servant, Herbie Johnson was and is a hero," Lipinski said.
