Mt. Baldy To Remain Closed Through Summer As Sand Hole Investigation Continues

(CBS) -- One of the most popular areas of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will be closed through the summer.

Still closed - and not expected to open any time soon: Mount Baldy.

The National Park Service is keeping Mount Baldy itself - as well as the parking lot, trail and beach closed to cars and people through the summer, at least.

They're doing more research on Mount Baldy to try to find out exactly what's going on below the surface.

It was last July when a six-year-old boy almost died after being buried 11 feet down in a hole in Mount Baldy for three and a half hours.

Lots of testing since then, including ground-penetrating radar which revealed dozens of anomalies in the dune.

Now more testing is expected to last until at least the end of summer.
