Mourners Attend Vigil For Yiran Fan, University Of Chicago Student Killed In Shooting Spree
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Dozens of people attended a candlelight vigil Thursday in honor of Yiran Fan, the University of Chicago student killed in a shooting spree over the weekend.
His parents traveled from China to be there as students and faculty paid tribute to the PhD student.
They say he was not only a brilliant business and economics student, but also a talented musician as well.
Fan was in a joint program of the U of C's Booth School of Business and the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics. Fan came from China to study in the United States. He was in the fourth year of his program and had hoped to propose his dissertation later this year.
Fan, 30, was shot dead while sitting in his car inside a parking garage in the Regents Park building, 5035 S. East End Ave.
The shooter also killed two other people -- doorwoman Aisha Johnson, 46, and convenience store shopper Anthony Faulkner Jr., 20 -- and wounded four others in a shooting spree that stretched from Chicago's South Side to suburban Evanston. The suspected gunman, Jason Nightengale, was ultimately shot and killed by Evanston police.
