Mount Baldy To Remain Closed For Summer
(CBS) -- Mount Baldy, the Indiana sand dune which has been closed since 2013 when a boy was trapped in a hole for hours, will be closed for at least one more season.
No decisions are being made about Mount Baldy until the Indiana Geological Survey study comes out this fall and gives a more complete picture of why those holes have formed.
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park Ranger Bruce Rowe says other studies have already pointed to trees in Mount Baldy: When they rot, they leave behind a hole, and a 6-year-old boy fell into one of those holes in the summer of 2013.
So now the question: Could Mount Baldy remain closed for good?
"Certainly that's something that not only the public has speculated on but we've speculated on," Rowe says. "But we can't make a decision yet just based on our speculation."
Rowe says they need the Geological Survey results this fall.
Before it was closed, 123-foot-tall Mount Baldy had 200,000 visitors a year.
Rowe says they get calls every day asking what's going on with Mount Baldy.
