Mother Surrenders Newborn Girl At Firehouse

(CBS) – A newborn baby girl has legally been dropped off by her mother at a South Side Chicago fire station.

The infant, who was only a few hours old, was left in the care of the firehouse at 106th and  Ewing Thursday evening.

A newborn girl was surrendered Thursday at this South Side fire station. (CBS)

Under the Illinois "Safe Haven" law, the mother was able to sign papers saying she was unable to take care of the baby.

The child was taken to Trinity Hospital and appears to be healthy.
