After Death Of 20-Year-Old Cook County Jail Inmate, Mother Wants Answers

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The mother of a 20-year-old Chicago area man is demanding answers - following her son's death over the weekend while he was in Cook County Jail.

The mother of Angel Cruz, Leticia Vargas, says she got a call that her 20-year-old son had died of a heart attack.

In disbelief, she says, she went to the hospital where he was taken from Cook County Jail and she says his body was covered with bruises and bite marks.

"I don't know the truth, but I want to know the truth because if you have kids - and this is my only child - I want to know what happened to him," Vargas said. "I'm not blaming anybody. I just want to know the truth."

A spokeswoman for the jail has said the bruising had been documented by jail officials when Cruz was admitted five days before he died.

Cruz had initially been arrested in Countryside, after an attack on his mother and stepfather.

The police chief in Countryside says his department handled the investigation "with kid gloves" and went "above and beyond for the family and for Mr. Cruz."

The medical examiner says a final cause of death cannot be determined until toxicology results are in.
