More Than 200 Animals Killed In Wisconsin Barn Fire

(CBS) -- Nearly 250 animals were killed in a barn fire Thursday in Whitewater, Wis.

WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports, when firefighters arrived, the barn was totally engulfed in flames, and the roof had collapsed.

"A considerable loss for the homeowner," said Whitewater Fire Chief Don Gregoire. "Most of his livestock was lost in this fire."

Most of the animals were goats and sheep, but the homeowner told CBS 58 in Milwaukee he also had chickens, ducks, and peacocks in the barn – nearly 250 animals altogether.

A neighbor said the property owner loves animals, and there was a moment of happiness hours after the fire, when two Great Pyrenees dogs feared to have died in the blaze showed up at the home hours after the fire, exhausted but safe.

The owner was at work when the fire started, and officials said it doesn't appear suspicious.
