More Snow Expected To Roll In Monday Before Chicago Thaws Out
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Forecasters are predicting another winter wallop to the Chicago area, with up to 6 inches of snow expected to fall on Monday.
A winter weather advisory for snow across all of northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana is slated to last from 6 a.m. through 6 p.m. in a slippery start to the week, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters urged drivers to use caution as a mix of sleet and freezing rain turns to a steady snowfall of up to an inch or more per hour at times. Between 3 and 6 inches are expected to pile up.
Precipitation should taper off by early Monday evening before temperatures climb above freezing. Tuesday's forecasted high is 40, followed by 38 on Wednesday, a relative heat wave in the middle of one of Chicago's coldest winters on record.
The warmth could bring new problems, though, with a rapid snow melt possibly leading to flooding.
The current snow pack on the ground in most of northern Illinois is equal to between 1 and 4 inches of water if it melts completely, according to the weather service.
