Monday, Chicagoans Will Know Who's Really Running For Mayor
(CBS) -- The clock is ticking for Chicago mayoral hopefuls still planning to run in the February primary.
They have until Monday to file their petitions to get on the ballot.
CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine says the men considered the two top challengers to incumbent Mayor Rahm Emanuel have yet to file.
One of the them, Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, said Friday he's definitely in.
Ward 2 Ald. Bob Fioretti declined a request for an interview but his attack on the mayor and his budget earlier this week left little doubt as to his intentions.
Neither Fioretti nor Garcia sent people or petitions to the Board of Elections when filing began last Monday, conceding the top spot on the ballot to the mayor or one of the other first filers. They're expected to file Monday, along with several others.
Amara Enyia is among nearly a dozen potential candidates; she's got a website and a slogan, "One Chicago, Our Chicago."
Unlike the year-long Illinois gubernatorial campaign, the primary race will last just 95 days.
"I've run three Chicago marathons. This one's a sprint," Garcia says.
That may favor Emanuel, who's got both the money for paid media plus daily TV exposure, like a Friday job announcement.
Garcia says it's not a matter of money or name recognition. People want change because they're hurting, he says.
Probably the best any of other candidates can hope for is to keep Emanuel from getting more than 50 percent of the primary vote. That would set up a head-to-head battle in April.
Among the other announced candidates: Frederick Collins, William Kelly, Fenton Patterson, Robert Shaw, Dennis Sneyers, William "Dock" Walls, Willie Wilson.
