Mom Released Without Charges In 9-Month Old's Drowning In Cicero

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The mother of a 9-month-old baby boy who drowned in a bathtub at a home in Cicero earlier this week remains under investigation by police and child welfare authorities.

The baby's mother, said Cicero town Spokesman Ray Hanania, was questioned extensively by police and has been released. No charges have been made. WBBM's Mike Krauser reports.

The boy, who was just under 10-months old, drowned in the tub at his home in the 4700 block of West 20th Street, according to Cicero spokesman Ray Hanania.

He was taken to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, where he died at 1:59 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Hananai said no charges are being filed "at this time." He could not say whether the baby had been left alone in the tub; but said, police are still scrutinizing the circumstances very carefully.

"I can't discuss the specific circumstances, but I can tell you the police are all over this," Hananai said. "They take this very seriously. This is one of those things that just, you know, its painful to see something like this. But they want to make sure they get it right and obviously they have to do it in conjunction with the Cook County State's Attorney's office."

The state Department of Children and Family Services is also investigating the boy's mother and father for allegations of neglect, spokeswoman Veronica Resa said. The agency has not had prior contact with the family.

An autopsy on Wednesday did not rule on the boy's cause and manner of death, with results pending further investigation, according to the medical examiner's office.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The baby was just under 10-months old. His date of birth was May 19, 2016.
