Missing Dog Found Dead In River Grove

(CBS) -- We have an update on a story we reported two weeks ago about a Chicago veterinarian who had claimed a puppy she adopted from a rescue organization in Minnesota was stolen from her car, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

Ever since the dog named Neven went missing, a Chicago police officer and animal lover Kathy Kiss has on her own time been searching.

Officer Kiss spoke with the veterinarian and the vet admitted the puppy wasn't stolen. She said the dog got away from her. The vet never filed a police report.

The officer also spoke with the woman's fiancé who said when she brought the dog home a couple weeks ago, he was upset because the time wasn't right.

Chad Burgess at Midwest Animal Rescue near Minneapolis says she has told five or six stories to different people.

Now, the dog has been found dead in River Grove along some railroad tracks. Officer Kiss had put up some flyers in the area and some teenagers led her to the body Friday night. A scan of the chip verified it was Neven but an exam was inconclusive; there was no trauma.

Officer Kiss was driving halfway to Minneapolis to meet Burgess to hand over the body and Burgess a necropsy would provide a cause of death. The veterinarian told the officer she has been fired.
