Michael Sam Sr. Struggling With News Of Son's Coming Out

(CBS) The father of Michael Sam, who is on a path to become the first openly gay player in the NFL after publicly coming out Sunday, is struggling with the news that his son is gay.

Michael Sam Sr. told the New York Times that "I'm old school. I'm a man-and-a-woman type of guy."

Sam Sr. was eating at a restaurant when he received the news in a text. It left him so unsettled that he left the restaurant.

"I couldn't eat no more, so I went to Applebee's to have drinks," Sam Sr. told the Times. "I don't want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment."

Sam, a former Missouri football player, is a defensive end/outside linebacker who is projected to be a middle-round pick in May's NFL Draft.
