Person seriously injured after freight train hits vehicle in Harvard, Illinois

A man was seriously injured when a freight train hit a car in Harvard, Illinois, early Thursday morning.

According to the Harvard Fire Protection District, a freight train crashed into a vehicle at the McGuire Road railroad crossing around 2:24 a.m. Officials said the car was fully engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived. 

Harvard fire officials said a man was found 20 feet down in a nearby ravine after the crash. He was taken to a hospital in Rockford with serious injuries.

Metra confirmed inbound and outbound service on the Union Pacific Northwest Line was temporarily suspended at Harvard after the crash, but has since resumed.

The crash remains under investigation by the Metra Police Department
