Men Charged With Leading Police On Highway Chase

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two men were charged with reckless conduct Wednesday after they allegedly led police on a high-speed chase following a robbery Tuesday night in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.

The driver, Willie Douglas, 31, of the 1300 block of West 76th Street, was charged with misdemeanor fleeing/eluding police and reckless conduct. He was also given traffic citations for driving on a suspended license, driving with no insurance, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, disobeying a red light, driving with no headlights and trespassing CTA property, police said.

Douglas' passenger, Donald Watkins, 24, of the 5800 block of West Lake Street, was charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct, according to police.

The incident happened about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday when police saw two men commit a robbery in the 3000 block of West Jackson Street, police said.

The suspects got in a vehicle and drove onto the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) at a high rate of speed after seeing police. They ultimately crashed their vehicle near Ashland Avenue and Congress Parkway, police said.

The suspects then ran off before they were arrested near CTA railroad tracks, police said.

Both Douglas and Watkins are due in traffic court on April 20.
