McHenry School District To Make Offer To Striking Teachers

(CBS) -- Thousands of students remain in limbo as a teacher strike continues for McHenry High School District 156.

Today teachers expect to get a new offer from the district. There's no word on the specifics of the deal, but it could help get educators back into class and off picket lines.

The strike began last Thursday. The union will hold a "back to school rally" today, outside the board of education office.

Shortly after that rally, negotiations are scheduled to resume for McHenry High School District 156.

The big issues include pay-raises and rising health insurance premiums. The board says it will have a new proposal when they meet.

At times, past negotiations were described as tense that was the case Friday when the two sides exchanged ideas. Today we'll find out if that exchange leads to classes back in session.

"I have no idea how long this is going to go on, but I am very hopeful, nobody wants this strike to continue for too long in the district and I think we're all going to work really hard to make sure that we can get our kids back in the classroom," said Heidie Dunn, East Campus communications director.

For now, no classes and no after school activities like sports.
