McCarthy Not Surprised By Assault Rifle Theft At South Side Rail Yard
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago Police say the recent theft of 13 semi-automatic assault rifles from a South Side rail yard is a concern, but not a surprise, reports WBBM's Terry Keshner.
"It is probably a more frequent occurrence than you would believe," said Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.
The rifles were taken from a freight train container on South Lafayette Avenue in Englewood sometime between Sunday and Tuesday. McCarthy says guns are stolen all of the time, that is part of the problem.
"We're with the ATF, they're the lead agency on that. I believe those guns are right here in this community," said McCarthy.
He spoke during a news conference announcing that Chicago Police have seized more than 2,100 illegal guns so far this year.
"Safeguarding firearms is something that is incredibly important to prevent them from being stolen and hitting the streets," said McCarthy.
