Mayor Emanuel Names Ginger Evans As New City Aviation Commisioner

(CBS) -- Mayor Emanuel has named Ginger Evans to lead the city's Department of Aviation.

Ginger Evans is the vice president of engineering for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

Evans has more than 30 years' experience in engineering and aviation industries.

She will oversee O'Hare and Midway and immediately confront the jet noise problem coming from O'Hare.

"Chicago's airports provide a unique competitive economic advantage, putting us at the crossroads of the global economy," said Mayor Emanuel in a press statement. "As an engineer, Ginger Evans understands the structures and systems that make our airports run, but also their importance as economic drivers for the city – making her the right leader at the right time for Chicago's Department of Aviation."

Evans replaces Rosemarie Andolino, a favorite of former Mayor Richard M. Daley. Andolino had no background in either aviation or construction management.

Evans will start her new role on June 1.
