Mayor Emanuel Attends 'Radio Town Hall'

(CBS) -- Issues of financial stability, violence and education were among those raised to Mayor Emanuel during The Chicago Radio Town Hall Meeting on Monday.

The 30-minute program was heard on more than 40 stations throughout the city, including WBBM Newsradio.

A recent study found more than 6,000 people left the Chicago area in 2015 – the largest decline of any metropolitan region in the nation.

Event moderator Bill Kurtis asked Emanuel what the city can do to encourage people to stay.

Emanuel said good schools and safe streets are the biggest factors.

The mayor says violence is the main reason residents, especially African Americans, are leaving.

"There are parents who won't let their kids on the porch, when it starts to get dusk," Emanuel said. "Parents won't let their kids go to the playground even if it's down the street."

"That's fundamentally not right. We're a better city than that."

He says more officers will continue to crack down on problem areas on the South and West sides of Chicago.
