Five Dead In Maryland Newsroom Shooting

ANNAPOLIS, MD (CBS) — Police are investigating an active shooter situation in an Annapolis newsroom, where at least five people are dead. One person has been taken into custody.

Officers responded to the 800 block of Bestgate Rd. in Annapolis, which is where The Capital Gazette newspaper offices are located.

Reporter Phil Davis was in the newsroom and sent updates via Twitter.

At a news conference, authorities said law enforcement was on the scene within 60 seconds of the initial 911 call and a suspect was taken into custody. Authorities said the shooter was armed "with a long gun" but could not provide more specifics on the weapon.

The editor of the newspaper posted on Twitter a few hours after the attack.

The suspect is a while male in his 20s, according to CBS News. He apparently, according to sources, damaged his fingertips and was in possession of smoke bombs.

President Trump said he was briefing on the shooting and offered his thoughts and prayers.
