Marshall High Coach Shot In Humboldt Park

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Gunmen shot a Marshall High School assistant basketball coach Wednesday as he sat in his car at a stop light on Chicago's West Side.

Police News Affairs Officer Vijay Zala said the victim, 38-year-old Shawn Harrington, was struck in the back and left side. One of the bullets shattered Harrington's clavicle.

WBBM has learned that Harrington's daughter also was in the car at the time of the attack, at Augusta Boulevard and Hamlin Avenue, but escaped injury.

Zala said the gunman approached the car and fired multiple times.

Chicago Fire Department paramedics transported Harrington to Stroger Cook County Hospital, where doctors stabilized him. He was reported to be in serious condition, following surgery.

Marshall Athletic Director Dorothy Gaters confirmed that Harrington was the victim and that he was on his way to school at the time of the attack. She declined further comment.

Harrington was a member of the 1994 Marshall High School basketball team portrayed in the award-winning documentary "Hoop Dreams."

A Chicago Board of Education spokesperson said Harrington has worked at Marshall since 2007 and, since 2011, has been a special education classroom assistant in addition to his duties as assistant basketball coach.
